Delaware Sports Betting Brings In Some Legal Help

The NFL is doing all it can to slow down the state of Delaware so they can not initiate a full single game sports betting system by the start of the 2009 football season. It looks like the state of Delaware will continue to move ahead for now. Word did come down yesterday that a possible injuction could be on the way from Chief Judge Gregory M. Sleet at the request of the NFL and the other major sports leagues in U.S.

It is my guess that Governor Markell will continue with his plan to re-introduce sports betting to Delaware as long as it looks as if the tax payers are not being dragged into a long lawsuit process that could cost the state millions of dollars. The NFL knows that the longer they can prolong this situation, the better off they will be.

Wilmington group to defend state’s sports wagering plan

Faced with defending its sports betting plans against a lawsuit brought by America’s major sports leagues, the state has hired a private law firm to make its case, Gov. Jack Markell’s legal counsel said Wednesday.

The Wilmington firm of Bouchard Margules & Friedlander will lead the state’s efforts to thwart the leagues’ bid to prevent Delaware from having single-game betting on National Football League contests, and bets of any kind on college sports and pro baseball, hockey and basketball.

The leagues are not trying to prevent Delaware from offering parlay, or multiple-game bets, on NFL games at its three racetrack casinos.
