What happened to NFL claim that gambling is bad and evil?
Since the discussions began months ago, some here in Delaware thought the big, bad National Football League was going to blow the lid right off the state’s attempt to introduce legalized sports betting by invoking the “integrity” of its port.
After the NFL filed its huge lawsuit against Delaware, the argument went, it would alleged that gambling is bad and evil and that it could lead to some undesirable types trying to fix a game to win a bet. As Associated Press columnist Tim Dahlberg wrote Monday, that’s an old, tired and laughable argument to a betting industry that analyzes everything “from the wind patterns at Lambeau Field to the main course at the team breakfast and would quickly spot any wrongdoing.”
But wait. If the NFL is so against betting on its teams, presumably in any form, what’s this about the state lotteries?
Well, it seems the NFL board of geniuses has now approved allowing states to include team logos and mascots on state lottery tickets, as long as the NFL gets a piece of the action on the ticket sales. Say what?
This from the sports industry that forbade the city of Las Vegas from airing a promotional TV advertisement during the Super Bowl game a few years ago.
The NFL has planned to make an argument in court that betting on football odds or game spreads in Delaware is actually a skill and therefore not a lottery as the Delaware constitution allows. The state Supreme Court is currently thinking over the proposed changes to the state gambling laws.
But we’re afraid the NFL’s position against associating gaming with its less than squeaky-clean image is now kaput.
They may be putting their name on an innocent lottery ticket, but ask any anti-gambling person and they’ll tell you in no uncertain terms: Gambling is gambling.
